Cormac McCarthy was born in Rhode Island in 1933 but moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, at the age of four. He finished high school in 1951 and attended the University of Tennessee in 1952, but left the following year. In i953 he enlisted in the Air Force and served for four years. After his discharge he returned to Tennessee and attended the University for four years. McCarthy is the author of The Orchard Keeper, Outer Dark, Child of God, Suttree, Blood Meridian, and All the Pretty Horses, which won the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He lives in El Paso, Texas.
