I WAS only an Ambassadorial Representativeof the President. I took this action because ofDr. Stuart's fifty-odd years experience in China,and his character, his personality and histemperament. With Dr. Stuart beside me, I hadmore than fifty years of vast experienceunprejudiced by personal involvements inChinese partisanship. On his appointment, Ifound his advice and leading assistance ofinvaluable help to me. I doubt if there is anyonewhose understanding of Chinese character,history, and political complications equals thatof Dr. Stuart.
